Rapidly growing and emerging science offers dentists and their teams opportunities like never before. As a profession we have continued to learn more effective communication and relationship building skills. Regarding our patients as unique, precious individuals and helping them make positive decisions about their own health seems to be an ever-expanding perspective within our profession. Now we can combine those benefits with a much more accurate understanding of periodontal disease, well beyond “gum disease,” with the role of inflammation and microbiomes in our efforts to assist individuals seeking our care having a whole-person, much healthier future.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- The entire dental team, clinical and administrative, will be encouraged to believe and to understand the scientific basis of how their impact on the health of everyone in their practices can be both extremely effective and tremendously gratifying.
- A more correct understanding of the pathogenesis and progression of periodontitis will grow into appreciating its role in whole-body health or disease and how improving periodontal health can enhance systemic health.
- How emerging science has revealed more specific strategies that engage each patient as their own primary therapist in the treatment of their periodontal disease with the dental team assuming the role of world-class support.
