The Pankey Institute Announces New Board Members
KEY BISCAYNE, FL, January 12, 2012 – The Board of the L.D. Pankey Dental Foundation, Inc., also known as The Pankey Institute, is proud to announce the recent election of four new members to its Board of Directors. Joining the Board are Dr. Herbert Blumenthal, Dr. Edmond Mukamal, Dr. Glenda Owen, and Dr. Bruce Trefz.
Dr. Herbert Blumenthal received his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 1960. He earned his dental degree from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in Memphis in 1964 and immediately went into practicing general dentistry. He first attended the The Pankey Institute in 1974, which is the same year he began seeing patients for treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders. He has extensive postgraduate training in physical therapy, chiropractics, biofeedback, neurofeedback, and nutrition.
Dr. Blumenthal is a member of the Tennessee State Dental Society, the Memphis/Shelby County Dental Society, the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, The Pankey Institute Alumni Association, and the The Pankey Institute Triple Plus Club. Additionally, Dr. Blumenthal has attended and taught at the Institute for the past 37 years. He is an Advisor and from 1993-1997 served as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Institute’s Alumni Association, where he also served as Vice President from 1995-1997 and President from 1997-1999.
Dr. Edmond Mukamal earned a Bachelor of Engineering Science degree from SUNY at Stony Brook. Upon graduation, he worked as a mechanical engineer involved with the design and fabrication of power plants for General Electric. His engineering experience was applied to the study of dentistry at New York University and, after completing a general practice residency at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City, he ultimately became a member of the teaching staff at the hospital.
Dr. Mukamal’s Pankey experience began in 1993 and he has been on the visiting faculty since 1999. Dr. Mukamal was President of the Institute’s Alumni Association from 1997-1999 and has been awarded the distinguished status of Pankey Scholar.
Dr. Glenda Owen earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism, a master’s degree in public health, and her dental degree all from University of Texas. From 1982-1990, she served as an Assistant/Associate Clinical Professor of Operative Dentistry in the UT Dental Branch in Houston. After working for several years as an associate, Dr. Owen has been in sole private practice since 1995.
Dr. Owen has been active with The Pankey Institute since 1994, having taken numerous courses. She has served as an Advisor since 2006 and became a Pankey Scholar in 2010. In addition to her activities and leadership role with the Institute, Dr. Owen earned her Fellow of the AGD in 1996 and served as the President of the Houston Chapter of the AGD from 1999-2000. She is a member of the American Equilibration Society, the Southwest Academy of Restorative Dentistry, The American Association of Women Dentists, the American Dental Association, the Texas Dental Association, and the Greater Houston Dental Society.
Dr. Bruce Trefz is the President and CEO of Oral and Implant Surgicenters. He received his dental degree from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1973 after completing undergraduate degrees in zoology and pharmacy. He received a certificate from University Hospital in Ann Arbor after completing a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery and is a University of Michigan Rackham Graduate School degree holder with a master’s in neurosciences. Since the start of his career, he has authored numerous publications within dentistry.
