As dentists, our training with patients in school was all about becoming adept at the skills necessary to provide predictably successful dental procedures for them. We examined them for what they “needed”, unless they were examined by someone else before being “referred” to us for specific procedures so that we could complete our requirements. In dental school patients are effectively reduced to two lists, the first one noting everything that is wrong with them, and the second, listing the things necessary to fix those things that are ‘wrong’. In most dental school systems, that second list becomes the only one that really matters since it represents the opportunity to sell people what they need and allow students to meet the requirements for graduation. Is it any wonder this is the model most dentists carry forward to their practices? The truth of this is reflected in dental practice management software where only the second list can easily be entered into the database. We wonder why we struggle to find patients who ask for our dentistry. We’ve been trained to sell them the wrong stuff. It’s not about the dentistry outside of dental school.

- Embrace what they actually have to sell the patients who come to them.
- Recognize that a focus on PROCESS rather than PRODUCT can help them attract people who will ask for dentistry.
- Understand what marketing looks like in a practice where process is the focus and dentistry is the result of a patient’s experience in it.
