Speaker Profile

Dr. Brad DeGroot

Bradley DeGroot obtained his DDS from Marquette University School of Dentistry before completing his residency in Periodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. There, he received his master’s degree for research on esthetic protocols for immediate implant placement. Since graduating, he has worked full time in private practice in the Chicago, IL area. He is part of the McGuire institute for participating in practice based clinical research and has published articles and textbook chapters in implantology, surgical orthodontic therapy, interdisciplinary treatment, guided surgery, full-arch protocols, and bone augmentation. He has lectured nationally and internationally on surgical and implant related topics. He and his wife, Hailey, live in downtown Chicago with their two children, Leo and Sosie.

DESCRIPTION

Extensive ridge augmentation has traditionally been a difficult procedure to predictably complete. However, there have been major advancements and publications in this field that seem to demonstrate more favorable outcomes. Much of the work has been done by select groups and may not be applicable in the hands of most surgeons. How applicable are these findings in everyday practice? How can we make informed treatment recommendations for our patients based on what we know about vertical and horizontal ridge augmentation? This presentation will cover the currently available techniques and materials for horizontal and vertical ridge augmentation. It will include data from a retrospective case series within our practice (vertical augmentation results and complications), in order to set reasonable expectations that can be used in both surgical and restorative practices to improve treatment planning and patient information.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Current trends in dental practice seem to be leaning more towards implant dentistry. This presentation makes the case for implants being a last resort and looking at alternatives to extraction. We will review current literature on implant success and survival rates while also examining some cases showing treatment involving implants and some that have avoided them.
  1. Review the state of the art of ridge augmentation: how technique and material selection may impact case outcomes.
  2. Review what results and complications can reasonably be expected in everyday practice for this treatment modality.
  3. Discuss the impact ridge augmentation abilities and limitations have on prosthetic treatment planning.
